Art therapy may be used in two main ways.
- Arts therapy can also aid the reflective therapeutic process. Images, movements and chosen objects may reveal emotions, experiences or thought processes.
- Arts therapy may be a form of relaxation and meditation. A person focused on art making may get into the “flow state”. This may allow the brain to concentrate on the process and become quieter creating space for relaxation.
Difference and similarities with traditional talking therapies
Arts therapy is similar to traditional talking therapies in that dialogue between you and the therapist aims to facilitate psycho-emotional healing and encourage new ways of being.
Arts therapy differs from traditional talking therapies as it uses the arts as a medium for exploration and communication in addition to talking.
The creative arts therapies are based on the idea that creativity enhances the well-being of all people and is a natural aspect of all cultures and human experience. It is an experiential psychotherapeutic approach utilising many creative modalities within a therapeutic relationship with a trained therapist. It is holistic – attending to emotional, cognitive, physical and spiritual well-being – and aligns well with indigenous models of health and well-being.
